Golf Results Wrap #1
March 9, 2009 by Cheap Golf Guy
OK welcome to the very first ever WWCG golf results weekly wrap-up…I’ll definitely have to come up with a much better name than that. I’ve got time.
The Honda Classic
Little known 37 year old South Korean Yong-Eun Yang won his first ever event on the PGA tour. What I find amazing about this guy is that apparently he only really took up the game at the age of nineteen, which seems to go against everything that we are led to believe about how to get to the top of the golfing tree.
It is extremely rare these days for a competitor in any professional sport to have taken up that sport at an age much older than double digits. Kind of gives me a little bit of hope that maybe there’s still a chance for me. Maybe my best years are yet to come. I may be thirty but I’ve got the body of someone at least…well probably thirty.
Champion’s Tour 2029 here I come.
Ye Yang has been a bit of a wanderer having played on pretty much every tour out there, and at the age of 37 seems to have finally found his groove at The Big Show. This isn’t his first big win however. His best ever result was a victory at a European Tour event in Shangai back in 2006 where he stepped up his game and took down some of the biggest names in the sport - Reitief Goosen, Jim Furyk and some Woods guy.
South Korea has had a memorable sporting week with compatriot Ji Yai Shin coming from eight shots back to claim the LPGA event in Singapore. Eight shots! Must have been some massive choking going on around her.
Then to top it all off South Korea defeated China in the World Baseball Classic. The South Koreans will be talking about this week almost as long as England has been talking about The World Cup in ‘66.
NZ PGA in Christchurch
Speaking of a good week in sport, NZ have claimed the top three places at the event in Christchurch co-sanctioned with the Nationwide Tour. If I had the time I could probably dig through the archives and come up with another event where they’ve done this, but I’d run the risk of wasting many hours on a hopeless task. NZ are lucky to have three golfers able to make the cut let alone sweep the board (obviously I’m an Aussie so I’m allowed to have a dig at them).
But on Sunday they showed some of that Kiwi fight to push all other countries from the top of the leaderboard. And while Alker managed to claim the win, equally impressive was 24 year old Josh Geary who also shot a 67 to finish 2 shots back. Geary’s talent has been recognised by insiders for a while, and it just may be that he’s finally ready to turn that potential into some results.
Danny Lee the current U.S Amateur champion again performed well finishing equal 7th. The South Korean born superstar in progress has made the most of his last southern hemisphere summer as an amateur. He will tee off at Augusta in the company of Tiger Woods before turning pro soon after. He has already served notice that the future of golf is in good hands.
He is probably still behind McIlroy in terms of development, and his work with the flatstick must definitely improve. But the temprament is excellent and his work from tee to green is outstanding.
LPGA Event in Shanghai
As mentioned above South Korean Ji Yai Shin came from well back in the field to claim her fourth LPGA event in eight months. Her final two rounds were a pair of 66’s, which was good enough to get her past the rest of the field and take the title by 2 strokes.
If you’d like a more detailed account of any of these tournaments I’ve included some links for you down below.
Good luck with your own golfing this week.
