Used Golf Balls

March 5, 2009 by Cheap Golf Guy

The used golf ball market is a massive industry worth hundreds of millions of dollars every year. There are huge companies out there that have contracts with hundreds and thousands of courses to dredge their water hazards for golf balls. Both equipment and divers are used with divers making a good living in many places doing this job.

And the end result is a cheap alternative millions of golfers can use to buy their golf balls. If you’ve never considered them before I’m going to explain why you should.

But Aren’t Used Golf Balls A Little Bit Dodgy?

I’ll start by referring to the question of quality which is often one of the reasons people can be a bit hesitant about buying used golf balls. There have been a few studies done on the effects on golf balls of being submerged, but they were inconclusive and not really comprehensive enough to be taken as gospel. They pretty much showed their was a slight drop in quality, but only single figure handicappers had the game for it to really be a factor in whether or not the balls should be used.

So Where Can I Buy Used Golf Balls

The options are almost endless - a simple search in google for used golf balls will show you that. I would recommend that you buy from some of the bigger, more reputable retailers. The good thing about these guys is they have in place reliable grading systmes so you can always be fairly confident you are going to get what you pay for.

Take Used Golf Ball Deals for example. Their website clearly indicates the five levels of grading they have ranging from ‘AAA’, which is like new through to ‘hitaway grade’ - fairly scuffed up, and mainly suitable for range and practice.

Are There Any Ways To Get Even Cheaper Deals

Sometimes there are. Like most online retailers, some of the used golf ball retailers will have coupons available from time to time

Here’s another tip - find out whether or not your golf course is under contract with a golf ball recovery company. If they are there might be an opportunity there for you to get some balls straight from the source, depending on the arrangement the club has with the company.

As a rough guide the divers get paid around 10 cents a ball, so if your local pro happened to tell you what day the course was being worked, and you happened to be out there on that day I’m fairly confident you could get yourself as many golf balls as you need for the rest of the season.

Yet another reason to have a good relationship with your local pro.

Another option when it comes to buying both new and used golf balls is eBay and I’ll talk about that in the next article
